Understanding Wedding Videography - Part 1: A Quick Introduction
It’s interesting to me that when someone throws themselves into a new pursuit, just how quickly they learn all the new terminology that exists almost solely within that niche. Take something broad like art, for example. If someone gets really interested in becoming an artist – suddenly they learn about a thousand words that meant nothing to them before they took an interest in becoming an artist. In fact, I did a two-word Google search to prove my point. I searched “Art terminology,” and the first link I clicked listed about 10 different words I’ve never even heard of, just in the “A” section! “Abstract Expressionism (huh?)”, “Automatism (what?)”, and “Assemblage (come again?)” just to name a few.
Now you’re asking yourself, why is this guy talking about art terminology? That’s a very fair question. My point is that oftentimes, when you’re deeply involved in something that you love to do, you take for granted that the majority of people will have no idea what you’re talking about when you use terms that are specific to your niche. This is something that I must remember. As I’m a videographer, or more specifically a wedding videographer, I must remember that the majority of people that approach me to film their weddings don’t understand the lingo that comes with wedding videography.
So, I’ve decided over the course of this series to attempt to break down and simplify what some of these terms mean, and more specifically, what these terms mean for my purposes and my business. That’s the distinction here – what do these terms mean for me and Fade to White Films. Here are some of the terms we’re going to be discussing:
What is the difference between a highlight reel and a wedding film?
What is a multi-cam edit?
What does coverage involve?
What is the difference between raw and color-graded footage?
